Bed Coverings
Bed Skirt - A decorative covering for the space from the mattress to the floor to give your bed a finished look. It is also known as a “bed ruffle” or a “dust ruffle.” A bed skirt is comprised of a flat piece of fabric with a panel or ruffle on three sides.

Blanket - A type of bedding, generally a large piece of cloth, intended to keep the user warm. Blankets can be made with light weight material for use during the warmer months or with heavier fabrics during winter.

Comforter - Two pieces of fabric stitched along all four sides that contain either synthetic or natural filling. A comforter covers the top and sides of a mattress but does not cover the bed pillows or entire box spring.

Coverlet - A decorative bedspread that covers the top of the bed only. Coverlets do not cover the bed pillows and do not hang to the floor. A coverlet can also be called a Matelassé.

Daybed Comforter - A type of comforter specifically for a daybed. This kind of comforter often comes in a twin size.

Duvet - A plain comforter that goes inside of a Duvet Cover.

Duvet Cover - A decorative case that fits over a duvet (a plain comforter), and is often known as a “comforter cover.” The duvet cover is usually closed with buttons, ties, or a zipper.

Fitted Sheet - This sheet type has elastic corners and fits tightly around a mattress. Also is known as a “bottom sheet.”

Flat Sheet - This sheet type is placed on top of a fitted sheet and then tucked under the sides and bottoms of the mattress. Also is known as a “top sheet.”

Hugger - A Hugger is a fitted comforter. The hugger would fit the mattress size while a comforter would just be wide enough to drape over the sides.

Mattress Pad - A cover for a mattress that both protects the mattress from soiling and moisture and increases the comfort of the mattress. Also is known as a Mattress Cover or Mattress Protector.

Quilts - A layer of cotton or polyester filling placed between two pieces of fabric. A quilt is held in place by stitching or sealing in a regular, consistent, all-over pattern. It is often lighter in weight than a comforter.

Boudoir Pillow - A small rectangular decorative pillow, often called a breakfast pillow.

Bath Linens
Bath Mat - Small lightweight mat to be used on the floor outside of bath or shower, often made of cotton terry.

Bath Rug - Small rug, often with a more plush quality and a no-slip lining underneath, for use after bath or shower on a tile floor.

Hand Towel - Usually made of cotton terry, these common towels tend to range in size from 16" x 26" to 16" x 30". Generally kept for use by the sink.

Shower Curtain - Curtain hung from a rod outside the shower to keep water inside the drain area. Can be made in any number of fabrics, but will often require a waterproof vinyl liner in addition to decorative curtain.

Toilet Seat Cover - Decorative cover that fits over the lid of a toilet.

Washcloth - Generally used for the face or in the bath or shower; tends to measure about 12” x 12” or 13” x 13”.

Bedroom Accessories
Table Skirt - Unlike a tablecloth, a table skirt covers only the sides of a table and usually hangs down to the floor. Can be pleated, gathered, or flat.

Tab Top Panel Curtain - Window treatments with fabric loops along the top, which can be slipped over the curtain rod. Body of the curtain is usually made of drapery-style material or lightweight sheer fabric.

Window Treatments - Curtains, drapes, and other decorative window dressings. Can be opaque to block light, or purely decorative in lighter-weight fabrics.

Window Valance - Short window treatment that covers the top of a window frame and the drapery hardware. Usually made with a casing on top which is gathered onto a curtain rod.
Fabrics
Chenille - A fuzzy cotton yarn or fabric that has pile protruding around it. Often has a pearly, shiny finish.

Cotton - Cotton is the single most popular fabric purchased by American consumers today. Cotton’s popularity stems from the fabric’s inherent benefits, such as its softness and its unsurpassed ability to accept and retain color. Cotton is cool in the summer, insulating in the winter. It “breathes” and therefore keeps body moisture away from the skin. It launders beautifully.

Egyptian Cotton - Has a longer staple than most other varieties of cotton. It can be spun into a finer texture thread and woven into a softer, more lustrous fabric.

Cotton / Polyester Blend - This blend offers the convenience of “wash and wear,” and is less expensive than 100% cotton products.

Damask - A woven cotton fabric made on a jacquard loom that has an alternating satin and matte texture. Damask fabrics are reversible.

Jacquard - A loom as well as a type of intricate fabric woven on a jacquard loom. The loom produces elaborate cloth weaves such as tapestries, brocades, and damask fabrics.

Linen - Spun and woven from flax, and therefore has several advantages over cotton. Its cooling effect makes it ideal for summer. Linen sheets grow softer with time and care. These extremely durable sheets can last for 20 years or more.

Matelassé - A cotton jacquard fabric. The term refers to the type of weave. It is a triple-woven fabric. This weaving process creates the signature raised pattern/appearance.

Percale - Usually made with combed yarns, this closely woven cotton fabric has a thread count of 180 threads per square inch or higher.

Sateen - A weave construction for mercerized cotton fabrics, which produces a smooth, lustrous surface.

Terry Cloth - Type of cloth that has uncut loops on the pile. Often used in bath linens for its softness and absorbency. Longer loops mean greater absorbency.

Twill - Weave that is characterized by the lines that are ribbed diagonally across the fabric.

Yarn-dyed - Yarns dyed in a bundle or package before weaving into fabrics like ginghams, stripes, and plaids. Also known as “color-woven” fabric.

Special Sizes
California King - A mattress size which is 6 inches narrower and 4 inches longer than a regular king mattress (also known as a Western King).

King Pillow - 10 inches longer than a standard pillow

Queen Pillow - 4 inches longer than a standard pillow
